THE BENEFITS OF PLASTIC
The benefits of plastic are huge. We use plastic every day for so many applications in our daily lives because plastic is so versatile compared to other materials. Plastic is light, easy to mold, cheap, and relatively strong. There are so many different types of plastic, it can be malleable or stiff, and it doesn’t decay or weaken over time. It is especially good at protecting things against contamination.
Because of its benefits, its no wonder plastic is used so prevalently throughout our society. Its resistance to contamination makes it excellent for food storage and sterile hospital environments. It has numerous commercial applications because it is so durable and lightweight, such as, using it for shipping items, construction, plumbing, windows, and aerospace. There are a so many beneficial uses for plastic that it is impossible to list all of them.
Plastic has a bad reputation for polluting the environment, however it has benefits to the environment as well. One of the first uses for plastic was to make billiard balls and false teeth. Prior to using plastic, people would use materials from animals to make these items. Elephants and turtles were killed and their tusks and shells were harvested to create these simple items. Since plastic was invented, killing these animals for these purposes is thankfully no longer needed or tolerated.
Plastic is required for creating renewable energy. Its use is required in the generation of wind power. Special plastics are used in wind turbine covers and the blades. Plastic also can be used in solar panels for converting the suns energy into electricity.
Plastic helps the environment by making transportation vehicles lighter, and therefore more fuel-efficient. Cars, planes, ships, and packaging all benefit from lighter weight enabled by plastic. Plastic insulation provides another means of helping the environment. Plastic is used in refrigerators, windows, and in walls which helps lower electricity consumption.
It’s hard to imagine a life without plastic. It has helped advance the world we live in drastically. Although plastic is so beneficial, the improper disposal of plastic is having negative repercussions on our environment. If all plastic could be disposed of properly, there would be very little downside to using plastic.

THE CONS OF PLASTIC
At this point, we know that while plastics has a lot of benefits, it also has a lot of negative effects on animals, people, nature, and the well being of all those living on earth. That being said it is very important to be aware of the negative effects of plastic in order to educate those around you, and to know what the appropriate steps are to prevent these negative effects from spreading.
All it takes is a quick Google search. Looking up “dangers of plastics” or “negative effects of plastics” is all it takes to see just how important it is to properly dispose of plastics, namely, by recycling. Some of the major repercussions of not recycling are: chemicals being absorbed by human bodies, plastic material being ingested by marine animals which can lead to injuries or death of the animals affected, and plastics that get
buried in landfills have the chance to leak harmful chemicals
into groundwater that will eventually be consumed by people or animals.
In no way was this site created to scare you away from using plastics, it was created to inform you of the dangers of plastics, while highlighting some of the more positive contributions that plastics make to our lives. Although it is very difficult to imagine a world without plastics, it is very important to take a minute and consider how to dispose of plastics in order to avoid spreading and increasing the repercussions that come with not recycling.
Next time you are eating a candy bar or drinking water out of a plastic bottle, think before you throw it away. Find a blue recycling container, or a bin with the proper labels on it, and put the plastic there. If you are not able to find a blue recycling bin, take the plastic home and make a fun DIY craft with friends and family. Whether you prefer to just throw the trash in the recycling bins, or get crafty with the plastic, it is essentially that we recycle the plastics we use to stop the dangerous, spreading effects plastics are having on human and animal life, as well as the environment.
